“And… Carolyn” was created by Alan Lucien Øyen for the garland and award winning dancers Camilla Spidsøe Cohen and Daniel Proietto in February 2008.
This short choreography was conceived on the audio-score from the movie 'American Beauty', - with music composed by Thomas Newman and texts by Alan Ball. In creating “And… Carolyn” on a cinematic score - with all sounds intact - the choreography becomes an abstract extension of the missing images from the film. We are left with the essence of cinematic emotionality to the soundscape of Alan Ball’s existential monologue.
“And… Carolyn” has won two 1st. Prizes for choreography:
Daniel Proietto toured the duet all over the world, including at the Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris, The Place in London, the opera houses of Dortmund, Braunschweig and Hanover, Germany and at renowned festivals such as the Torino Festival in Italy.
In 2018, Proietto performed “And… Carolyn” alongside the legendary star and artistic director of Paris Opera Ballet Aurelie Dupont, at the World Ballet Festival in Tokyo, the largest Japanese ballet festival. Proietto was the first contemporary dancer to join the line up at the prestigious ballet festival.
In 2021 the duet entered the repertoire of Paris Opera Ballet under Proietto’s staging.

“The program opened on the duet «And... Carolyn», choreographed by the Norwegian Alan Lucien Øyen in February 2008 for the dancers Camilla Spidsøe Cohen and Daniel Proietto. This short choreography was conceived on the audio-score from the Sam Mendes’ movie American Beauty, with music composed by Thomas Newman and texts by Alan Ball. In creating «And... Carolyn» on a cinematic score, the choreography becomes an abstract extension of the missing images from the movie. …«And... Carolyn» has been often awarded for its choreography. Camilla Spidsøe Cohen and Daniel Proietto, both from the Norwegian National Ballet, are very expressive and their performance underline perfectly all the emotion coming from the choreography, combined to the melancholy of the monologue.”
"The Norwegians opened the festival with a wonderfully beautiful duo called «And... Carolyn» with the prized Norwegian dancers Camilla Spidsøe Cohen and Daniel Proietto, choreographed by the famous Norwegian Alan Lucien Øyen. An eight minute long show to the music of the film American Beauty (by Sam Mendes), accompanied by Alan Ball’s existential monolog, mesmerised the spoiled Parisian public."
“«And... Carolyn» is like a gripping existential poem, it makes your hairs stand up and your body react with both sorrow and love.”
"«And... Carolyn», ed un breve, ma prezioso!"
